The cracked heel is a condition associated with the occurrence of cracks on the heels. The cracks or fissures can be shallow or deep. Having deeply cracked heels can lead to pain especially when walking or standing. Indeed, deep cracks on your heels can cause bleeding and can create a fertile ground for opportunistic infections of the feet. Cracked heels appear as dark brown or yellowish discoloration on the skin covering the heels. The edges of your heels tend to become very thick.
The occurrence of cracked heels is linked to insufficient moisture in the skin covering the heels. This can be as a result of excessive dehydration, diabetes, regular scrubbing of the feet including the heels, use of harsh detergent on the feet and excessive soaking of the feet in hot water among other reasons.

Cracked heels can be caused by various factors including excessive standing especially on hard floor, excess body weight that exerts undue pressure on the heels (obesity), regular wear of open shoes especially at the back, a medical condition such as psoriasis and genetics.
Home Remedies for Cracked Heals
Although often ignored, having cracked feet can be a source of serious discomfort. Furthermore, deep cracks make it very easy for bacteria and fungi to attack your feet only to cause infection. Luckily, dealing with cracked feet is very simple. Indeed, there are several home remedies you can use to treat and get rid of the condition. Some of the remedies include but not limited to:
1. Vegetable oils
Varied vegetable oils are very effective in addressing cracked heels. Such vegetable oils as coconut, sesame and olive oil among others are hydrogenated oils that keep your heels and feet properly hydrated, which goes a long way in allowing cracked sections to heal and close. You only need to soak your feet in warm soapy water, allowing the feet to dry before applying any of the oils. You need to allow your feet to rest for some time to make it possible for the oil to penetrate into the skin. Doing so on a regular basis should see cracks on your heels disappear.
2. Neem juice, Vegetable oil and Turmeric powder
This is one of the most powerful home remedies for cracked feet that you can use. It is particularly very effective in the case of deep cracks. You need to crush a reasonable amount of Neem tree leaves to form a paste. Add to the paste turmeric powder before applying the mixture on your heels and feet. You need to leave the paste on for at least 30 minutes before washing with warm water before drying your feet. Complete the treatment by applying any of the vegetable oils to leave your feet and heels treated and properly hydrated.
3. Lemon Juice
Lemon juice is a home remedy for a number of ailments including cracked heels. You only need to squeeze two or three lemons in order to obtain the juice. Mix the juice with warm water before soaking your feet in the solution for at least 15 minutes. Complete the treatment by scrubbing your feet especially on the heels before washing and drying your feet. Do so for several weeks on a daily basis for positive results.
4. Rosewater and Glycerin
This is the other very effective home remedy for cracked feet. You only need to mix the same parts of rosewater and glycerin before rubbing in the mixture in your heels. While rosewater is beneficial because it contains high levels of vitamins A, B3, C, and D, glycerin serves to keep your heels soft and properly moisturized.
5. Paraffin wax
This is the best home remedy to use just in case you have severely cracked heels. It involves melting a block of ice before adding in two or three tablespoonfuls of any vegetable oil. You need to allow the mixture to rest for several minutes until you notice a layer of foam on the surface. Dip your feet into the settled solution before removing. Repeat this several times before covering your feet with thin polyethylene and allowing the cover on for at least 30 minutes before removing the covers. Do so daily for several weeks for positive results.
Any of these home remedies is effective in treating cracked heels. However, you need to avoid a factor you have identified as the cause of a factor that encourages occurrence of the condition. You particularly need to avoid wearing open shoes during course of treatment.
